CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Kevin Gursoy is now a member of the Halifax Mooseheads.
The Charlottetown Islanders traded the overage forward to the rebuilding Herd Tuesday for a sixth-round pick in 2021.
Gursoy, a 20-year-old right-winger from Windsor, Ont., was the odd man out when the Islanders acquired winger Ethan Crossman from Chicoutimi on Sunday. The Islanders traded a sixth-round pick in 2020 to the Saint John Sea Dogs for Gursoy on Aug. 27, 2018.
“Kevin came in and provided pretty steady offensive production from Saint John last year,” Isles head coach Jim Hulton said. “He’s been pretty steady and pretty consistent for us. This was just simply a case of stylistic change. We think, in order to have success in the playoffs, we needed to be a little bit faster and a little bit grittier.”
Gursoy has 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 35 games. He had 40 points in 62 games in 2018-19.
The Mooseheads traded all three of their overage players during the past few days as general manager Cam Russell tries to rebuild after hosting the Memorial Cup earlier this year. Defencemen Walter Flower and Patrick Kyte went to Rimouski and Chicoutimi, respectively, while forward Maxim Trepanier went to Shawinigan. The Mooseheads received a first-round pick, two seconds and a fourth in the 2020 draft in return.
“Cam and I have had good dealings in the past and I think we both understood it was important to do the right thing for (Kevin),” Hulton said.
