CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The 1984-85 Atlantic banner is back on UPEI’s campus.
Captain Doug Currie presented the banner to this year’s leadership group at Thursday’s induction ceremony.
“We want to carry on the tradition of the UPEI men’s hockey family,” he said. “We want to keep the legacy moving forward.”
Currie was a student-athlete for five years at UPEI and earned two degrees. He served as an assistant coach for four years and was the head coach for nine years.
Currie received the banner a few months ago after he started working at Holland College. He arrived one morning and was told an interesting man had been in looking for him.
“He had a hoodie, he was looking for the captain and he had a dog,” Currie said he was told. “Immediately (I knew) it was Vinny.”
Vinny, of course, is Vince Mulligan, the coach of the 1984-85 championship team.
“The last time (the banner) was seen was 35 years ago on a Saturday evening at The Barn after the celebrations,” Currie said.
A banner recognizing the 1984-85 team already hangs from the ceiling at MacLauchlan Arena.
