SYDNEY, N.S. — The Cape Breton Eagles have added a young defenceman to their roster in a deal with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Saturday.

Cape Breton acquired 17-year-old Jacob Squires from the Huskies in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 2020 and an eight-round draft pick in 2021.

'I'm really excited. I can't wait to get there and get started,” Squires said. "I’m super thrilled to be able to put on that Eagles' jersey whenever that time is.”
The Charlottetown product appeared in 52 games with Rouyn-Noranda last season, recording three assists and a minus-7 rating.

Squires, who suited up for the Charlottetown Pride – now known as the Charlottetown Bulk Carrier Knights – during the 2018-19 season, was a third-round draft pick of the Huskies at the 2019 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft.

He didn't expect to be dealt, but when the general manager called him around pick 50, he thought something could be up.

“Before I knew it my phone started going crazy when the trade was announced,” Squires said. "It all happened so fast."

Squires said he is looking forward to playing more games in front of family and friends in the Maritimes.

During his second year of bantam, he practised and was called up to play some midget games with the Pride. Eagles blue-liner Logan Kelly-Murphy was on the Pride at the time. He also worked with Eagles' D coach Matt Anthony at Andrews Hockey Growth Programs in Charlottetown during a couple of summers.
