Busy weekend for UPEI Panthers

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — It has been a busy few days for the UPEI Panthers on the ice and the basketball court.

Following is a roundup of weekend action:
Basketball
Women

The Panthers opened the 2019-20 Atlantic University Sport regular season with a pair of wins against the St. Mary’s Huskies. The scores were 63-38 on Friday and 60-57 on Saturday after outscoring the Huskies 21-12 in the fourth quarter.
Reese Baxendale (17) and Jenna Mae Ellsworth (13) were UPEI’s top scorers.

Men
The men’s Panthers split their first two regular-season games against Saint Mary’s. UPEI won 71-68 on Friday night and lost 92-87 on Saturday.
Elijah Miller (25) and Emmanual Ndatuje (21) paced UPEI’s offence in Game 2.

Hockey
Men

The UPEI men’s hockey team split two weekend games – winning 3-2 in overtime in Moncton on Friday night and losing 6-3 at UNB on Saturday.
Owen Headrick, Doug Blaisdell and Conor MacEachern scored for the Panthers against UNB, which outshot its visitors 52-19.
UPEI’s record is 2-7-1 (won-lost-overtime losses).

Women
It was a good weekend for the Panthers’ women’s hockey team as they won back-to-back home games – 4-1 over Mount Allison on Saturday and ??-?? versus UNB on Sunday afternoon.
Rachel Colle, Jenna Pellerin, Kelly Clements, Samantha Mintz and Sophie Vandale scored for the Panthers against UNB.
Camille Scherger earned the shutout as UPEI improved to 8-2-1.
