Birt rink defeats Newfoundland and Labrador at Scotties

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Prince Edward Island is back in the win column at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw, Sask.

The Suzanne Birt-skipped rink from the Montague Curling Club defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 9-3 in eight ends on Tuesday morning to improve to 3-2.

P.E.I. started well with a deuce in the first and stole one in the second. The teams traded singles the next three ends before Newfoundland stole one in the sixth to make it 4-3.

The Birt rink of vice-skip Marie Christianson, second Meaghan Hughes and lead Michelle McQuaid scored a deuce in the seventh and stole three in the eighth.

They play the Yukon (0-5) Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Atlantic and the Northwest Territories (2-2) Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
