MONCTON, N.B. — Nikita Alexandrov scored the lone goal in the shootout and Matthew Welsh was perfect in the skills competition Friday as the duo backstopped the Charlottetown Islanders to a 4-3 victory over the Moncton Wildcats.

Alexandrov had a goal and two assists in regulation while Kevin Gursoy and Colin Van Den Hurk also netted markers for the visitors. Hunter Drew, Brett Budgell, Jordan Maher and Xavier Bernard each added an assist.

Jakob Pelletier had two goals and Charles-Antoine Giguere one for the host Wildcats. Adam Capannelli, Brady Pataki, Jacob Hudson and Aleksi Anttalainen each had a helper.

Welsh made 21 stops in regulation and overtime while Francis Leclerc made 29 saves.

After a scoreless first period, Moncton took a 2-1 lead to the third on Pelletier’s pair. Giguere made it 3-1 four minutes into the final frame before Alexandrov cut the deficit in half two minutes later. Van Den Hurk tied the game with 7:33 left.

Moncton was 1-for-2 on the power play while Charlottetown never had a chance with the extra man in front of an announced attendance of 4,930.

The Isles improved to 29-14-2-3 while the Wildcats are 26-17-3-4.

The Islanders host the Sherbrooke Phoenix, which lost 8-2 Friday in Halifax, tonight at 7 p.m.
