CHARLOTTETOWN – It’s not too often you come across someone who has faced elite basketball talent in LeBron James, DeMar DeRozan and James Harden, to name a few.
But Islanders will soon get to meet combo guard Robbie Robinson – the Island Storm’s newest signing – who has done just that. Robinson is currently in Los Angeles participating in the annual Drew League – a summer league that showcases basketball’s best from the high school, college, streetball, international and NBA circuits.
“I was invited to play in the Drew League my sophomore year of college. In order to get into the league you have to be a top player and recognized as a good athlete,” the 29-year-old said. “It’s a lot of fun playing against guys like DeMar and many other NBA players.
“It’s a true test to see where your game stacks up against the best.”
His Drew League team, Pandas, is headlined by former NBA star Metta World Peace. Following Robinson’s stint in Los Angeles, the six-foot-five guard will embark on a new journey to Canada and report to the Storm’s training camp after agreeing to terms with his new club.
“I’ve heard nothing but great things about Canada and Charlottetown,” he said. “This will be my first time in Canada and I am excited to see what it’s like. It will be nice to be in a small town and get a good feel for the community.”
Since his freshman year at Riverside City College, Robinson has built a reputation as a hustler on the hardwood. With his eagle-like six-foot-10 wingspan and ability to rebound and defend, the decision to sign the athletic guard was a no-brainer for the Storm.
“We’re pleased to add Robbie to our roster. He’s an athletically explosive player who can really shoot it and defend multiple positions,” said head coach Tim Kendrick. “We see him as a solid signing with what we’re trying to accomplish with our franchise. His skills and maturity on and off the floor mesh very well with our group.”
It wasn’t until his sophomore season in 2008-09 where he really took off. Robinson led the Tigers with 16.4 points and seven rebounds per game, and propelled them to a state championship. Robinson spent his junior year at Cal State Fullerton before transferring to Cal State San Bernardino to finish his education.
“My collegiate path taught me to be resilient and to not give up on fulfilling my dream of being a professional basketball player.”
After years of playing in leagues across the world, the Northridge, California native hopes he found a fan base on this small island that will welcome him with open arms.
“I want to come in and be a major contributor,” he said. “Based on my conversations with coach Kendrick, I feel I will fit in with the team very well. I really want to come in and help the team win a championship and do my part to the best of my ability.”
