CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Four members of P.E.I.’s Canada Games short track speedskating team found success in Chicoutimi, Que., in a recent tune-up event before the 2019 Canada Winter Games next month in Red Deer, Alta.
Andrew Binns led the Island contingent with a fifth place overall finish in Group 2 of the Quebec Provincial circuit meet.
Binns also set a new provincial record for junior men in the 1,000-metre event, edging Scott Beamish’s 10-year-old mark.
Kyle Connell of Charlottetown placed eighth overall in Group 2 after setting a new personal-best time in 500 metres, clocking in at 45.7 seconds. Connell also qualified for the Canadian junior selections in March in Sherbrooke, Que.
William Lyons of Rock Barra set new personal bests in 500 and 1,000 metres en route to 10th place in Group 2, while Thomas McQuaid of Charlottetown posted a personal best and won the 1,500-metre event. He placing eighth overall in Group 3.
Island skaters return to the ice this weekend on two fronts when Peter McQuaid and Jenna Larter compete at the Canadian Open national qualifier event in Montreal, while nearly 20 more skate at the Atlantic Canadian short track championships in Dieppe, N.B.
