CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Holland College Hurricanes basketball teams swept games Saturday from the University of King’s College Blue Devils

The ’Canes women won 74-70 before the men cruised to the 88-54 victory in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season play in Charlottetown.

Holland College got off to a slow start in the women’s game and found themselves down 13-0 midway through the first quarter. They battled back to trail 19-9 after one quarter and 34-32 entering the half. A big third quarter for the home side gave them a 57-44 lead entering the fourth.

Sophie Atkinson came off the bench with a game-high 20 points to lead the way offensively for Holland College while also adding 10 rebounds.

Danielle McKinnon went four-for-five from behind the three-point line and added a free throw for 13 points. Courtney Cain-Nordin added 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and three blocks in her home debut.

Ashley Plaggenhoef chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Kassandra Little had 14 rebounds, seven points, four assists, four blocks and three steals.

The ‘Canes move to 6-2 with the victory and sit third in the ACAA while the Blue Devils (5-3) are fourth.

The ’Canes led wire-to-wire in the men’s game after scoring the first seven points of the game.  They held quarter leads of 21-11, 46-30 and 63-44.

Nathan Anderson hauled in 20 rebounds to go with 12 points and three blocks in the victory. The 20 rebounds are one off Chase Bowden’s team record for most ever in a game set on Jan. 26, 2014.

Adrian Thompson had 30 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks in his home debut while Jayden McMullen added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The ’Canes (6-2) are third in the ACAA standings while the Blue Devils (2-6) are sixth.

The Sunday games between King’s and Holland College were postponed due to the snowfall in the weather forecast.

The Hurricanes return to the court on Saturday when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves at 1 and 3 p.m. (women/men).

The Seawolves women’s team (2-7) and men’s squad (1-8) are both seventh in the ACAA.
