HAMPSHIRE, P.E.I. — Two programs led Sam MacEachern to Holland College.

“I chose to enroll at Holland College because the bioscience program fascinated me. I feel that it will give me the skills to work in my dream profession,” the Bonshaw native said. “Another thing that attracted me to Holland College was their soccer program. I look forward to contributing on the field and being part of the Hurricanes family.”

The keeper has played in four national championships since 2014 and participated in the Vancouver Whitecaps Showcase Tournament in British Columbia. She will join a Hurricanes squad coming off an 8-3-1 regular season in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) before losing 3-1 to Mount Saint Vincent in the semifinal.

“Sam is an exceptional student-athlete,” said head coach Kris McKinnon. “She is a top recruit in Atlantic Canada, and we are very happy to have her join the Hurricanes. She is athletic, brave and her ball distribution will make her an instant impact in the ACAA.”

MacEachern, who played last season with both the P.E.I. under-18 team and the Bluefield High School Bobcats, was named the top keeper in the P.E.I. high school league. The former member of the under-17 P.E.I. F.C. and RC United clubs said communication and a competitive spirit are key ingredients to playing well as a team.

“In the upcoming season, I will help bring these aspects to the team by being vocal and playing with heart,” she said. “I feel that my greatest strengths as a player would have to be my determination and competitiveness. I play with passion and do well to push myself and my teammates.”

The Hurricanes will begin their regular season on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. when they host the St. Thomas Tommies at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.
