Axemen, Axewomen both go 2-0 in pool play Friday

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The host Three Oaks Axemen and Axewomen are off to impressive starts in the 23d annual David Voye Memorial rugby tournament.

Both teams went 2-0 (won-lost) in pool play Friday to qualify for Saturday’s semifinals. The Axemen, who defeated Colonel Gray 31-5 and North Nova 17-5, will face arch-rival Charlottetown Rural in one of two boys’ semifinals at 10 a.m. The other semifinal will feature an all-P.E.I. clash between Colonel Gray and Bluefield.

On the girls’ side, the Axewomen will meet North Nova while Avon View and Charlottetown Rural will meet. Both of those semifinals are set for 9 a.m.
The Axewomen won 31-5 over Cobequid Educational Centre and 19-0 versus Halifax West.
The girls’ championship game is scheduled for noon while the boys’ title match will go at 1 p.m.

A total of 17 teams -- 11 girls and six boys -- from P.E.I. and Nova Scotia are taking part.
