SUMMERSIDE – The contributions of five individuals to the sport of baseball in Summerside will be in the spotlight later this month.
Four former players – Grant Grady, the late Bennie Grady, the late Maurice Cannon and the late Frank Oatway – and one builder – the late Paul Gallant – will be honoured. All five individuals will have their names inscribed on the Legends Monument at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Legends Field.
The ceremony is scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 30, beginning at 2 p.m.
Inductees
Summerside Legends Field committee chairperson Paul H. Schurman, who announced the honourees in a media release, said Grant Grady “was a great little third baseman” who continued his involvement with the sport coaching for a number of years following his playing career.
“He would always find his way to first base, whether he got on with a bunt or punching the ball to left or right field, and he had a great glove,” noted Schurman.
Grant’s brother, Bennie, was described by Schurman as a “starry third baseman.”
Schurman said Cannon was “a classy first baseman and long-ball hitter,” while adding Oatway was a “starry first baseman and leading hitter in the late 1940s and early ‘50s.”
Gallant was the scheduling and program co-ordinator for the City of Summerside at the time of his sudden passing in the fall of 2017.
“(Paul was) a leader of all activities that went on at Queen Elizabeth Park,” noted Schurman.
