CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Holland College volleyballers hit the floor Saturday at ACAA conference semifinals in Charlottetown

The Holland College Hurricanes begin the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball championships in earnest Saturday in Charlottetown when the teams hit the floor in semifinal action.

First, the second-seeded women face the highest remaining seed (UNBSJ, Mount Allison or St. Thomas) from Friday’s quarter-finals at 2 p.m. then the third-seeded men tangle with second-ranked UNBSJ at 7 p.m.

The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics come in as the top seed at 21-0 and get the lowest-seeded winner in the other women’s semi at 11:30 a.m.

Abby Hyndman led the ‘Canes with 176 kills (fourth overall) in the regular season, while Katie Wood had 240 digs, good for the team-high and second overall in the ACAA.

The women have lost in the title game three of the last four years.

On the men’s side, Brett Butler (205 kills, first overall) and Marcus Lapointe (161 digs, third overall) paced the ‘Canes in the regular season. Holland College lost in last year’s final after winning the ACAA crown in 2017.

The second men’s semi has top seed St. Thomas facing fourth seed Universite Sainte-Anne at 4:30 p.m.

Sunday’s championship games go at noon for the women and 2:30 p.m. for the men.

The women’s winner represents the ACAA at the nationals March 7-9 in Welland, Ont., while the men crown a national champ March 6-9 in Red Deer, Alta.
