SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The 2018-19 season may be over for the Summerside Western Capitals, but there was no shortage of news involving the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) team on Friday.
Forward and assistant captain Brodie MacArthur was announced as one of five finalists for the Canadian Junior Hockey League top forward award. Also nominated are Dylan Holloway of the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Okotoks Oilers; Alex Newhook of the British Columbia Hockey League’s Victoria Grizzlies; Josh Tripp of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Swan Valley Stampeders, and Keighan Gerrie of the Superior International Junior Hockey League’s Thunder Bay North Stars.
The winner will be announced May 10.
Outstanding season
The now-20-year-old MacArthur was named the MHL’s player of the year for 2018-19 season. He led the league in goals (43), assists (67), points (110), power-play assists (20), power-play points (34), points per game (2.20), game-winning goals (10) and tied for the league lead with four short-handed goals.
The son of Kim and Rodney MacArthur of Summerside took just 24 penalty minutes while playing in all 50 regular-season games. He was held pointless just seven times and recorded 34 multi-point games. His longest point streak reached 23 games and he posted five hat tricks and had 13 games with at least three assists.
He was named the MHL’s third star of the month in December, first star in January and second star in February/March.
Shea commits to UPEI
Also on Friday, the Caps tweeted that graduating forward and team captain TJ Shea of Tignish has committed to the UPEI Panthers for the 2019-20 Atlantic University Sport season.
In three seasons with the Capitals, Shea recorded 83 goals and 125 assists for 208 points in 122 career games.
Shea, who missed a good part of the past season with an injury, won the league scoring title with 105 points in 48 games during the 2017-18 campaign. He was received league most valuable player and all-star honours that season.
Shea, who was named Hockey P.E.I.’s male player of the year in the summer of 2018, was selected for the MHL’s rookie all-star team in 2016-17.
