Welsh leads Islanders to 4-0 win over Saint John

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Matthew Welsh made 32 saves for his ninth career shutout to move into first place on the Charlottetown Islanders franchise list Wednesday in a 4-0 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Ryan Mior had eight from 2003-07 while Antoine Bibeau and Jonathan Cayer are third on the franchise list with six each.

Alex D’Orio stopped 37 shots in the loss at Eastlink Centre.

Keith Getson, Kevin Gursoy and Thomas Casey led the Isles offence each with a goal and assist. Rookie Zachary Beauregard scored his second of the season.

Rookie Xavier Fortin earned his first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League point, an assist on Casey’s first period goal. Cole Edwards, Liam Peyton and Daniel Hardie also had helpers.

Charlottetown held 2-0 and 3-0 period leads.

The Isles went 1-for-5 on the power play and killed all five of Saint John’s chances.

Charlottetown improved to 2-1-0-0 while Saint John fell to 1-1-1-0. The Islanders host Acadie-Bathurst Titan (0-2-0-0) Thursday at 7 p.m. and captain Pierre-Olivier (P.O.) Joseph is expected to be in the lineup.
