SUMMERSIDE – The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers rode special teams to an important road win Wednesday night.
The Vipers, who connected for two power-play goals and one short-handed tally, defeated the Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros 5-1 at the Cody Banks Arena to improve to 12-7-0 (won-lost-overtime losses). Vipers also opened up a four-point lead over the Metros (10-11-0) in the race for second place.
Garrett Murray scored a pair of goals and assisted on another for a three-point night to lead the Vipers. Dylan Wheatley netted a brace and CJ McCardle (1-1) accounted for Kensington’s other goals. Assists were credited to Jonathan Arsenault (2), Parker Ronahan, Keegan Buchanan and Jesse Jay.
Alex Hambly, assisted by Jacob Stewart and Jordan Birt, netted the Metros’ lone goal.
Kensington, which held period leads of 2-0 and 3-0, received a 36-save effort from goaltender Cameron Visser. Ben Parent faced 40 shots in the Sherwood-Parkdale goal.
The Vipers were whistled for four minors, one fighting major, one 10-minute misconduct and one game misconduct. The Metros picked up four minors, one fighting major, one match penalty and one game misconduct.
League action resumes on Saturday, when the first-place Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings (17-3-0) take a 12-game winning streak into Souris to face the Eastern Maniacs (0-15-0).
