Vipers end Red Wings’ winning streak

ABRAM-VILLAGE – The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings’ winning streak is over at 15 games.
Easton Smith scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers to a 4-1 road victory over their arch-rivals at the Evangeline Recreation Centre on Sunday afternoon.
Garrett Murray (1-1) and Nick Bouchey also scored for the Vipers, who sit third in the Island Junior Hockey League standings at 11-12-4 (won-lost-overtime losses). Logan Vandervelden added two assists as Kensington closed to within three points of the second-place Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros (14-12-1).
Cole Hackett, assisted by Alex Morrissey and Chasse Gallant, opened the game’s scoring for the league-leading Red Wings, who dropped to 17-6-2. It was the Red Wings’ first loss since a 4-3 overtime decision to the Moncton Vitos in an interlocking game with the New Brunswick Junior Hockey League on Nov. 9.
Western led 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes, but two goals less than a minute apart in the second half of the middle frame sent the Vipers into the second intermission ahead 2-1.
Overall, the Vipers held a 28-24 shots-on-goal advantage. Rett Rook earned the goaltending win, and Bronson Banks was between the pipes for the Red Wings.
Referees Jeff Heron and Justin DesRoches assessed seven of the game’s 10 minor penalties against the Red Wings.
