The Toronto Six put up a zero in their first ever game, but women’s pro hockey is back on the map in the city.
Toronto was shut out 3-0 by the Metropolitan Riveters on Saturday in the opening game of the six-team NWHL Isobel Cup at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y.
“First time we’ve played together, we have a few bugs to work out,” said coach Digit Murphy of losing to a more established club. “But we’re a high energy team. A couple of bounces today, it could’ve gone the other way. It’s not about winning our first game thus year, it’s the last game.”
Among the good luck messages for the Six was one from the Toronto Blue Jays.
“We’re in the best hockey city in the best hockey country in the world,” Murphy said.
The half-dozen NWHL teams compressed their season into a two-week bubble because of COVID-19, with Toronto the lone Canadian entry. The Six’s next game is against the Minnesota Whitecaps on Sunday.
Leila Kilduff scored twice in the first period for the Metropolitans, who are based in the New Jersey/New York area, while Elaine Chuli of Waterford, Ont., played well in Toronto’s goal, allowing two with the Mets adding an empty netter.
