CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Mark Rassell had three goals and an assist Friday to pace the UNB Varsity Reds to a 9-4 victory over the UPEI Panthers in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action.

Tyler Boland scored twice while singles went to Morell’s Stephen Anderson, Christopher Clapperton, James McEwan and former Charlottetown Islanders forward Alexandre Gouet. Randy Gazzola had three assists while Goulet and Mark Boudens each had a pair. Former Isles forward Oliver Cooper, Olivier LeBlanc, Kris Bennett, Anderson, Noah Carroll and McEwan all added one.

Rookie Luke Kirwan had two goals and an assist for the Panthers while Brent Andrews had a goal and two helpers at MacLauchlan Arena. Gabe Guertler also scored.

Riley Whittingham had two assists while singles went to Olivier Arseneau and Kameron Kielly.

Alex Dubeau made 35 saves for the victory while Matthew Mancina allowed nine goals on 41 shots.

The Varsity Reds held 2-1 and 6-3 period leads. UNB was 0-for-1 on the power play while UPEI was 0-for-2.

The conference-leading Reds improved to 20-1-3 while UPEI dropped to 11-9-2, one point back of St. FX and Moncton for third place but with a game in hand on both squads. The Panthers conclude the weekend Saturday in Moncton for a 7 p.m. game.
