CAMPBELLTON, N.B. – Coleton Perry of North Bedeque helped the Campbellton Tigers earn a 5-1 victory over the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals on Friday night.
The MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) game was played before 927 fans at the Campbellton Memorial Civic Centre.
Perry, who played the last two seasons with the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild of the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League and has three goals and seven assists in his rookie season with the Tigers, opened the game’s scoring at 7:36 of the first period.
Chris Chaddock, assisted by Brodie MacArthur and Cameron Roberts, pulled the Caps even before the first intermission. MacArthur, who is second in league scoring with 68 points, extended his point-scoring streak to 27 games.
The Tigers, who improved to 19-14-2-1 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses), netted the only two goals of the middle frame. Tristan Young made it 2-1 at the 21-second mark of the second period, and Pascal Valcourt’s power-play goal at 8:09 sent the Tigers into the second intermission ahead 3-1.
The Tigers’ Drew Toner (14:53) and Raphael Otis (19:42) scored insurance goals late in the third period to put the game out of reach. Pierre-Luc Lurette contributed a pair of assists for Campbellton.
The Capitals (25-14-1-0), who are second in the Eastlink North Division and were playing their third game in four days, suffered a huge blow early as TJ Shea, who is running away with the league scoring race with 93 points, was assessed a kneeing major penalty and game misconduct just over a minute into the game.
Shea’s ejection also marked the end of his 33-game point streak.
Greg Maggio turned aside 33 of 34 shots in earning the goaltending win. Alex Bishop was tested 42 times in the Capitals’ net.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Pierre-Luc Lurette (Tigers), 2. Tristan Young (Tigers), 3. Brodie MacArthur (Capitals).
The Capitals’ next game is scheduled for Thursday, when the league-leading Edmundston Blizzard (27-8-3-0) visit Eastlink Arena for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
