SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — There will be a local connection with the newest franchise in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League).
It was announced on Monday that the St. Stephen Aces will relocate to Fredericton, N.B., for the 2018-19 season. St. Stephen recently completed its fifth season in the 12-team loop.
The Aces will now be known as the Fredericton Junior A Red Wings and will play out of the Grant Harvey Centre, which features a 1,500-seat NHL-sized ice surface that can hold a capacity of 2,200 fans.
Brent Grant, who starred with the Summerside Western Capitals in the now-defunct Island Junior A Hockey League in the late 1980s, was announced as the Red Wings director of hockey operations.
The Red Wings are owned by the eight-member Global Centre Ice Inc. group.
Roger Shannon, who has a long association with the Gardiner MacDougall-coached UNB Varsity Reds and 14 years experience working in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, will serve as the Red Wings governor and director of operations.
