Sprong nearing milestone goal, point as Charlottetown Islander

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Daniel Sprong can take another step up in the Charlottetown Islanders franchise record book tonight.

The 19-year-old right-winger is tied with Michael Lambert for career goals with 105 and is tied with Pierre-Andre Bureau for career points with 239. Ben Duffy leads both categories with 139 goals and 241 points.

“It’s cool to be part of the record books. And so high up, it means I had a great time on P.E.I.,” Sprong said before Wednesday’s practice. “They're nice accomplishments.”

Sprong has played 190 career games spread across four seasons. He played two full seasons with the Islanders and started 2015-16 with the Pittsburgh Penguins before returning to Charlottetown at Christmas time. He missed the first half of this season after off-season shoulder surgery.

Bureau has 346 career games and Duffy 334 to lead the category.

Sprong is fifth in career assists with 134, one back of teammate Filip Chlapik. Duffy leads with 202.

Sprong was named the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s first star of the month for February on Wednesday.

He had 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points in 11 games. The month included three game-winning goals and three contests of four points. Since returning from injury on Jan. 6, Sprong has 37 points in 22 games.
