CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Cody Payne scored twice to lead the UPEI Panthers to a 4-1 victory over the Acadia Axemen Friday in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action.
Kameron Kielly had the game-winning goal and an assist for the home side at MacLauchlan Arena. Beau McCue added a shorthanded, empty-net goal. Filip Rydstrom had two assists while Troy Leajeunesse, Tanner McCabe, captain Brent Andrews and goalie Simon Hofley each chipped in one.
Stephen Harper scored unassisted for Acadia.
Hofley made 27 saves for the win while Logan Flodell stopped 24 shots in the loss.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first while the Panthers took a 3-1 lead to the third. The Axemen were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Panthers were 1-for-4.
UPEI improved to 7-5-1, five points up on Acadia (4-8-2). The Panthers host the second-place Saint Mary’s Huskies (11-3-1) Saturday at 7 p.m. The Huskies defeated the first-place UNB Varsity Reds 4-3 in overtime on Friday.
