What you need to know about COVID-19: August 10, 2020
The 2020 Young Stars Classic, which was scheduled to make its return this September in Penticton after a one-year hiatus, has been postponed.
The Vancouver Canucks, along with the tournament hosts at the South Okanagan Events Centre, confirmed Thursday that the event has been postponed to a “future date due to COVID-19.”
Teams featuring prospects from the Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets were booked to compete from Sept. 11-15.
“Obviously circumstances dictated,” said Canucks’ assistant general manager Chris Gear. “We were looking forward to getting that back into the community.”
Gear said it’s possible the Canucks might try to hold the tournament in January — the NHL’s tentative plan is to start the 2020-21 season in early January — but admitted it’s most likely the Young Stars Classic will be held in September of 2021.
All of this is novel coronavirus permitting, of course.
“We haven’t really talked about it, so it’s unknown what the season will look like,” Gear said. “It all depends on what the other leagues are doing.”
This would have been the ninth edition of the popular tournament, which organizers in the past have said injects about $2 million into the local economy.
