FREDERICTON, N.B. — Mark Simpson scored six minutes into overtime Friday as the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the UPEI Panthers in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey playoff action.
The Reds lead the best-of-five semifinal 2-0 and can wrap it up Monday at MacLauchlan Arena. The Panthers will be looking to force Game 4 Tuesday.
Kameron Kielly scored 51 seconds into the game for the Panthers Friday in Fredericton, N.B. Sam Aulie and Gabe Guertler had the assists.
Mark Rassell tied it five minutes later with Matt Boudens and former Charlottetown Islanders forward Alexandre Goulet drawing the assists.
The game remain tied until Simpson ended it. Randy Gazzola and Kris Bennett had the helpers.
Alex Dubeau stopped 21 shots in the win while Matthew Mancina had 45 saves in the loss.
Each team was 0-for-5 on the power play.
