Panthers gain two points on Moncton in battle for home ice in the playoffs

MONCTON, N.B. — Captain Brent Andrews scored a pair of goals Friday to lead the UPEI Panthers to a 4-2 victory over the host Moncton Aigles Bleus in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action.

Luke Kirwan and Doug Blaisdell also scored while Chad Labelle, Nick Shumlanski and Riley Whittingham had the assists.

Danick Crete and Joey Richard responded with goals for the home side. Thierry Comtois, Edouard Michaud, Robbie Graham and Vincent Lanoue had the helpers.

Matthew Mancina stopped 34 shots for the victory while Etienne Montpetit made 28 saves in the loss.

UPEI held 1-0 and 3-1 period leads. Moncton was 1-for-4 on the power play while UPEI was 0-for-4.

The Panthers are 13-11-3, one point back of Moncton (13-11-4) for fourth place in the standings. UPEI has a game in hand, which it will play tonight. The Panthers are in Fredericton, N.B., to play the first-place UNB Varsity Reds (22-2-3) at 7 p.m.
