The Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild is the only P.E.I. team still alive entering Saturday night’s action at the 2019 Chronicle Herald East Coast Ice Jam hockey tournament in Bedford, N.S.
The Wild defeated Pictou County 4-1 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the quarter-finals of the Major Midget Division later in the day against the Cole Harbour WolfPack at 8:30 p.m. Kensington opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Cole Harbour on Wednesday night.
In other Round of 16 play on Saturday, the Cape Breton West Islanders rallied from a pair of three-goal deficits in the third period to eliminate the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride 7-6 in a shootout.
In major bantam play, the Joneljim Cougars won a Round of 16 matchup against the Central Attack of Charlottetown. The final score was 5-2.
Wild 4 Pictou County 1
Four different players – Bennett MacArthur, Jack Campbell, Kalib Snow and Dixon MacLeod – scored for the Wild, who went 2-0-1 in the round robin. Ethan Beaulieu, Zach Biggar, Simon Hughes, Reid Peardon, Matt McQuaid, Zac Arsenault and Duncan Picketts chipped in with assists.
Devin Meagher netted the lone Pictou County goal.
The score was tied 1-1 after the first period, and the Wild was in front 2-1 after the second.
Chad Arsenault earned his third win of the tournament, and he has allowed just one goal in each of the three games.
Islanders 7 Pride 6 (SO)
The Islanders trailed 5-2 and 6-3 in the third period, before rallying for three goals in the final 6:21 in regulation time to force overtime
The extra session solved nothing, and the Islanders prevailed in the shootout.
Sam Grant (1-2), Neil MacLean (1-2), Matthew Raike (1-1), Matthew Ellis (1-1), Daniel Gillis and Daniel LeBlanc scored in regulation time for the Islanders. The scoring stats from the shootout are unavailable.
Cameron MacLean (2-1), Noah Griffin (2), Jake Squires (1-2) and Bradley Campbell countered for the Pride, who entered the Round of 16 playoff round as the No. 1 seed after going 3-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses) in the round robin. Alex Graham (2), Seth Morris, Ed McNeill, Austin Callaghan, Hunter Bradley and Sam MacNeill assisted.
The Pride held period leads of 2-0 and 3-2.
Brandon Connors earned the goaltending win while Jonah Arbing was between the pipes for Charlottetown.
Cougars 5 Attack 2
Drew MacIntyre and Logan O’Neil each scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Cougars past the Attack, who went 2-1-0 in the round robin. Brandon Clarke (1-1), also scored.
The Attack goals came off the sticks of Max Sentner and Kal White, with single assists credited to Luke Coughlin, Isaac Vos and goaltender Jack Howatt.
The Cougars led 1-0 after one period, and 4-2 at the end of the second.
Winning goaltender was Lucas Fraser.
