KENSINGTON – Memories of a well-known minor hockey coach in Kensington will be rekindled this weekend.
The inaugural Dave Martin Memorial midget A hockey tournament will begin on Friday evening, and continue through to Sunday. Credit Union Centre in Kensington will be the site of 11 of the tournament’s 15 games, with the Gateway Arena in Borden-Carleton hosting four round-robin matches.
Martin, who played minor hockey in Summerside and was a proud member of the 1963-64 Maritime-champion Summerside Junior Legionnaires, took over as minor hockey director in Kensington in 1968. He would later return to Kensington, and coach at all levels with the minor hockey program during a lengthy career behind the bench.
Midget champions
It is fitting that the tournament in Martin’s memory features the midget A category. One of his proudest moments was coaching the Kensington Compton Auto Body team to the 1980-81 provincial midget championship.
The tournament features eight teams – the host Kensington Junior Vipers, Alberton, North River Three, Southside, Rustico, Sackville, North River One and Georgetown. The top four teams after the round robin will qualify for Sunday morning’s semifinals, with the championship game later in the day at 2:30 p.m.
The official opening ceremony will take place at Credit Union Centre in Kensington on Saturday at 11:40 a.m., and the public is encouraged to attend. Kensington will take on Southside immediately following the opening ceremonies.
