Islanders beat Foreurs in shootout

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Brett Budgell scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout Wednesday as the Charlottetown Islanders defeated the Val-d’Or Foreurs 3-2 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at the Eastlink Centre.

Jordan Maher and Zachary Beauregard gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead in the first period that held up until Ivan Kozlov and Maxence Guenette scored 2:35 apart midway through the third.

Xavier Bernard, Nikita Alexandrov, Daniel Hardie and Brendon Clavelle had assists for Charlottetown while Jeremy Michel, Marshall Lessard, Nicolas Ouellet and Renat Dadadzhanov had helpers for the Foreurs.

Matthew Welsh made 34 saves in regulation and overtime plus four more in the shootout for the victory. Jonathan Lemieux stopped 40 shots in 65 minutes plus three of four in the shootout in the loss.

The Foreurs were 1-for-7 on the power play while the Islanders went 1-for-3.

Charlottetown improved to 36-20-4-3 while Val-d’Or is 22-35-4-2.

The Islanders head to the Sydney, N.S., for back-to-back games with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Friday and Saturday.
