Island squads each go 0-1-1 at major midget jamboree

MONCTON, N.B. — Prince Edward Island’s two major midget hockey teams each went 0-1-1 Saturday during the first day of action at the jamboree in Moncton.

Here’s a recap of Saturday’s contests.

Saint John 2, Kensington 2

Carson MacKay’s unassisted goal in the third period was the equalizer as the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild tied the Saint John Vitos 2-2.

Jamie Collins from Donovan Arsenault had given the Wild the lead six minutes into the first period.

Trey (his last name was not available) and Keegan Gilbert scored two minutes apart to provide Saint John with a 2-1 lead heading to the second period.

Josh Smith played goal for Kensington while Jeremi Delaquis was the Vitos’ goalie. Shots on goal were not available.

Northern 5, Charlottetown 3

A four-goal second period led the Northern Moose to a 5-3 victory over the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Knights.

Kolby Baker from William Smith gave the Knights a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Ryan Hackett and Anthony Parent scored power-play goals to give the Moose the lead and Hayden Lynch and Parent scored to make it 4-1 heading to the third.

Max Sentner and Sam Worth scored to cut the lead to one, but Justin David added the insurance marker shorthanded late in the third.

Colby MacDonald (2), Holden Bradley and Avery Brown had the assists for Charlottetown in the third period.

Josh O’Neil earned the victory while Aiden Rose took the loss.

Fredericton 4, Kensington 0

Zachary Graham had a goal and two assists as the Fredericton Caps shut out the Wild 4-0.

Colby Morin, Andrew Gweon and Dawson Breau also scored in the victory. Blake Green and Matthew Parker shared the shutout. Josh Smith allowed three goals in Kensington’s crease while Ty Arsenault allowed one.

Moncton 1, Charlottetown 1

Nolan Stewart’s second-period goal was the equalizer as the Knights tied the Moncton Flyers 1-1.

Noah Matulu gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal in the first period.

Stewart tallied on the power play to tie the game with Brown and MacDonald drawing the helpers.

Rose (Knights) and Logan Steevs (Flyers) were the goalies.


Action continues today with Charlottetown playing Saint John at 12:30 p.m. and Fredericton at 4 p.m. Kensington plays Northern at 2:15 p.m. and Moncton at 5:45 p.m.

Saint John 3, Charlottetown 0

Saint John did all its damage in the second period in defeating the Knights 3-0.

Riley Rooney, Riley Nordstrom on the power play and Luke Thorne scored. Jack Flanagan earned the win while Jack Howatt took the loss.

Kensington 3, Northern 2

Landon Clow scored the winner in the third period as the Wild defeated the Moose 3-2.

The winning goal came 1:40 after Kieran Rennie tallied the tying goal for Kensington.

Cole Augustine gave the Moose a 1-0 lead. Sam Bowness tied it 17 seconds into the middle stanza, but Anthony Savoie restored the Moose lead at 8:29 of the second period.

Carson MacKay and Sam MacNeill had assists for Kensington. Turner Ellis earned the victory while Samuel Landry took the loss.
