One-goal road win completes Western’s sweep of Maniacs

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. —

The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings are headed back to the Island Junior Hockey League championship series.

The Red Wings pulled out a 3-2 road win over Eastern Maniacs on Friday night to sweep the best-of-seven semifinal series. The Red Wings, who finished first in the regular season at 30-4-2 (won-lost-overtime losses), will play in the league final for the fifth straight year, and will be looking to win their third straight provincial crown.
The Red Wings will now await the winner of the semifinal series between the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers and Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros. The teams go into Sunday’s Game 3 in Kensington tied 1-1 after exchanging 5-4 overtime wins. Puck drop at Credit Union Centre is 7 p.m.

Winning goal
At the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris, Alex Morrissey’s second-period goal stood up as the game-winner in the series-clinching win versus the Maniacs.
Chasse Gallant and Brydon Smith also lit the lamp for the Abram-Village-based Red Wings. Silas Handrahan (2), Matt Thompson (2) and Dawson McCormack added assists.

Dawson Palmer (1-1) and Nick Steele countered for the Maniacs. Chris Sear had one helper.
The period scores were 2-1 and 3-2 in favour of the Red Wings.

Luke Oliver picked up the goaltending win, and Noah Laybolt was between the pipes for Eastern.
The Red Wings were whistled for five of the game’s nine minor penalties. Each team picked up one fighting major and one game misconduct.
