The Maple Leafs aren’t waiting around to get some clarity on the start of the 2020-21 regular season.

Practice facilities across the National Hockey League have been permitted to be open for voluntary workouts since Oct. 15 and the Leafs are taking advantage.

“We got a good group of guys, a lot of prospects, and then a good handful of guys from the squad from the Leafs,” defenceman Travis Dermott said.

“We got the big powerhorses like (Zach Hyman) leading the way, big (Jason) Spezza is in there. Got Dicky Clune (Rich Clune), who just re-signed (with the Toronto Marlies), who is getting the boys all excited in the gym every day.”

One new teammate who hasn’t been in Toronto, of course, is Joe Thornton, who is playing for Davos in Switzerland as he awaits the start of the NHL season.

“I haven’t been able to talk to him yet, but I’m really excited to meet him,” Dermott said of the 41-year-old future Hockey Hall of Famer, who signed with the Leafs last weekend. “It’s going to be really cool having him on the bench beside me. Definitely a guy I never thought I’d be playing with, but someone I grew up watching a lot.”
