The Caps acquired the Charlottetown native’s MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) rights from the Yarmouth Mariners on Saturday night for defenceman Sacha Guay, rookie forward Mike Snow, goaltender Alex Kelly of Kensington and a third-round pick.

“We paid a hefty price,” said Capitals general manager Pat McIver. “It's a tough one.

“The guys who are leaving our team are good kids, but we felt with what happened in Valley last week it was necessary to make a move to pick up a goaltender like Daryl MacCallum.”

The Valley Wildcats of the MHL had their No. 1 goaltender, Blade Mann-Dixon, called up to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and McIver noted the Caps are only a phone call away from having the same thing happen to rookie Matt Williams, who has an 11-4 (won-lost) record, 3.04 goals-against average (GAA) and .910 save percentage in 15 games.

“Matt Williams was skating with Saint John this week,” said McIver. “We felt it was necessary to make a move, and Daryl wanted to play in Summerside.

“We’ve actually been working on it for quite some time, and then when we saw what happened in Valley we felt it was time to get it done.”

The 19-year-old MacCallum previously played with the Charlottetown Islanders and briefly with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

He had a record of 2-1-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) and a 2.81 goals-against average and .917 save percentage with the Islanders this season. Last year, MacCallum had a 4.65 GAA and .859 save percentage in 23 regular-season games, before putting up a 3.26 GAA and .911 save percentage in eight playoff matches.

“Daryl is eligible for this year and next year, he has major junior experience and he has major junior playoff experience,” said McIver. “We feel Daryl and Matt Williams will give us a great tandem, and we will have the luxury if we lose one guy or one gets hurt to go with the other guy.

“I think Daryl is going to be great in our league, and he is motivated to come in and help us.”

MacCallum is expected to practise with the Caps on Monday.

"Once I found out Summerside finally got my rights I was pretty ecstatic," MacCallum said. "I know they have a good team this year, so hopefully (we can) win something and bring it back to P.E.I."
