KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — Although the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild’s return home has been delayed, it is business as usual for the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League team this week.
Credit Union Centre in Kensington was scheduled to open for the 2019-20 season on Monday, but a power outage from hurricane Dorian resulted in the ice being lost. It had to be removed on Tuesday and will be reinstalled later this week.
“It’s unfortunate, but it’s one of those things that is uncontrollable,” said Wild owner and general manager Mike Gallant. “We are just going to keep moving forward with our camp to get ready for the regular season.”
In the meantime, Gallant noted the Wild has booked ice time at Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown to continue preparations for their 2019-20 regular-season opener in the P.E.I. capital against the Bulk Carrier Knights on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. The Wild’s home opener is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m., against the Saint John Vitos.
Credit Union Centre manager Robert Wood said on Tuesday he is hopeful the arena will be open between Sept. 19 and 21.

Players in camp
Although the Wild was hoping to be back home this week, camp is proceeding as normal. Kensington reduced its roster from 26 to 19 players on Tuesday night. The breakdown involves two goaltenders, six defenceman and 11 forwards.
“We wanted to get down to our team this week and have a good few practices as a team, a few team-building exercises and get ready for the season,” said Dunn.
Teams can sign a maximum of 20 players, but the Wild left one card open.
“We have had some success leaving spots open in the past, but we have a real good camp going right now and guys have earned their spots,” said Dunn.
Overall, Dunn likes what he has seen to date.
“Right now there are a lot of new faces at camp,” said Dunn. “We want to continue on the path we have been on the past few years with a hard-working team.
“Those are the things we are implementing in camp right now. I like seeing that and the rest of the stuff, with more teaching and coaching, will come as the year goes on. The work ethic is there right now, so it’s good to see.”
