SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Nikita Alexandrov scored twice and set up another as the Charlottetown Islanders closed out 2018 with a 4-1 win over the Sea Dogs Monday afternoon in Saint John, N.B.

Thomas Casey and Will Sirman also scored while Xavier Bernard, Zachary Beauregard, Brett Budgell and goalie Matthew Welsh each had an assist.

Filip Prikryl scored the Sea Dogs lone goal on a second period penalty shot.

Welsh made 26 saves for the win while Alex D’Orio stopped 32 shots in the loss.

The Isles held 1-0 and 2-1 period leads. Charlottetown was 0-for-2 on the power play but killed all three of the Sea Dogs chances with the man advantage.

It was the Islanders third straight win coming out of the Christmas break. The victory improved their record to 23-10-2-1 while the rebuilding Sea Dogs dropped to 7-27-2-1.

The Islanders host the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Moncton Wildcats Sunday at 3 p.m. Saturday will mark the return of Derek Gentile to the Eastlink Centre. The veteran right-winger was traded home to Sydney, N.S., in the deal that brought Noah Laaouan to the Island.
