Summerside’s Justin Caron is the top Islander after the first day of play at the Canadian junior boys’ golf championship in Hartland, N.B.
Caron shot an even round 72 and is tied for 48th in the 156-golfer field at Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club.
Defending champ Christopher Vandette, 18, of Beaconsfield, Que., recorded a 10-under 62 to equal the lowest round ever in the history of the 81-year event. The round, which included an eagle on the par-4 15th hole, also broke the club record of 64.
Dustin Franko of Delta, B.C., is three shots back in second place while Mark Chandler of Chester, N.S., is third, four strokes back of Vandette.
Charlottetown’s Luke Dillon and Belfast’s Cam White recorded rounds of 3-over 75 and are tied for 86th while Summerside’s Sam McNeill was 7-over and is tied for 141.
Round 2 began this morning.
