The Holland College Hurricanes three-year reign atop the Atlantic Football League is over.
The Dalhousie Tigers completed an undefeated season Saturday by beating the Hurricanes 29-11 in the Moosehead Cup in Halifax.
“I’m proud of these guys, and the way they came back in the last two weeks,” Hurricanes head coach Ross Young said of his young team. “This was a great experience, and now we’re looking forward to guys like Thomas MacKenzie and other veterans taking leadership roles.”
Holland College’s offence struggled Saturday and the team had a hard time holding on to the football, resulting in seven turnovers.
“A championship game is full of surprises,” Young said. “We had some troubles and turnovers will kill you.”
The offence amassed negative yards in the first quarter.
The Hurricanes struggled on the first two attempts of their opening possession and decided to punt on third down. The snap sailed over punter Liam Carter’s head and rolled into the end zone, where it was recovered by the Dalhousie defence for a touchdown.
The Tigers led 7-0 after the first quarter.
The teams traded single points in the second quarter before Dalhousie scored on a 27-yard field for an 11-1 lead.
Dalhousie turned another fumble into a 14-1 halftime lead.
In the opening minutes of the third quarter, first-year Hurricane MacKenzie Campbell intercepted Dalhousie quarterback Nick Hunsley and ran 76 yards for the touchdown.
The Tigers restored their 13-point lead with a major of their own.
Carter kicked a 41-yard field goal following a Torriano Curtis interception to cut the deficit to 10, but Dalhousie added a fourth quarter touchdown off an interception and added a single on the ensuing kickoff.
