If you were watching the Calgary Stampeders closely in 2019, you know just how huge a role Derek Wiggan played.

Maybe he didn’t generate a ton of headlines, but Wiggan started all 18 Canadian Football League games on a defensive line that suffered an unusual number of devastating injuries and played at an all-star level at defensive tackle.

For that, the Stampeders rewarded the Toronto native with a new two-year contract on Tuesday morning.

Wiggan was a fourth-round selection of the Stamps in the 2014 CFL Draft and has consistently improved year-over-year ever since.

In 2019, he picked up a career-high 35 tackles and four sacks while also adding two special-teams tackles and a knockdown.

“Derek really raised his game last season, and he was a great strength for us in the middle of the defensive line,” said Stampeders president/GM John Hufnagel. “I’m very pleased to have him back.”
