The regular-season runway is getting shorter and shorter for the Edmonton Oil Kings, who are now down to just single digits in games remaining before WHL playoffs get underway.

Following a 10-1 win over the Winnipeg Ice on Tuesday, the Oil Kings have taken over the top spot in the standings.

But that hasn’t changed anything, as far as they’re concerned.

“No, not really for us. We just need to keep building off what we did (last game) and end the season on a strong note and keep moving forward here and perfecting our game, because in playoffs there’s no room for mistakes,” said forward Jake Neighbours.

That’s not to say they haven’t taken the odd peek or two at how the playoffs are shaping up.

“It’s definitely in the back of our minds,” said rookie forward Dylan Guenther. “But if we just keep building and getting better every day, it will lead us to the right path into the playoffs.

“We leave for Lethbridge on Thursday and that’s a big divisional game, so we’ll have to be ready for that.”

And the next one. And the one after that, as they crest the point in the year where the more upcoming games they earn, the better.

“We’ve never been a team that looks too far down the road, we always take things week by week,” said head coach Brad Lauer. “This was the first game of the week and we move on from there. We’ve just got to stay focused here for what we want to do.”
