MONTREAL — Nothing was going to make Sean Whyte miss his mark on Sunday.

The veteran kicker of 13 Canadian Football League seasons was a perfect five-for-five between the uprights (43, 25, 35, 17 and 36 yards) to propel the Edmonton Eskimos to a 39-27 win in the East Division semifinal over a Montreal Aloeuttes club he previously played with.

And as much as he is looking ahead to next week’s divisional final round against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Whyte was also glancing back in the proverbial rearview mirror.

“Oh, hell yeah. I’ve wanted this opportunity since they cut me in 2015 and finally it came true,” Whyte said after ending what could only be described as a Cinderella season in Montreal. “I’ve been visualizing this day, this moment for a long time, but it’s all done now. I feel great, I’ve got a great rhythm with Kinger (Eskimos long-snapper Ryan King and (holder Logan) Kilgore going into an even bigger game.”

Of course, after watching the offence get off to 22 straight completions, the field-goal unit wasn’t even sure they’d see the field Sunday outside of converts.

“No, and I was cool with that,” Whyte said. “It just goes to show with the way we played today, we’ve been trying all year and what a way to come together as a team when we really need it.

“Guys played disciplined, we executed and I thought we played great.”
