Going into the season opening game, Summerside had not lost in almost five years which included four straight undefeated championship seasons.
Cornwall took an early 16-0 lead on a 30-yard Parker Williams run and a tough Timberwolves defence had an important goal line stand at the end of the first half, to shut out the Spartans going into the second half.
Rookie running back Michael Friesen got the Spartans back in the game on a 15-yard touchdown run, but that’s as close as Summerside would get as Cornwall added a couple of second-half touchdowns.
Wide receiver Ethan Haakman scored on a pass from quarterback Riley Molyneaux to close out the scoring for the Spartans.
Summerside will play the Charlottetown Privateers Sunday on the road in a 1 p.m. start and their first home game will be Friday, Sept. 29 against Cornwall.
