STRATFORD, P.E.I. — Stratford resident Gordie Dwyer is coming home with a bronze medal from the Winter Youth Olympic Games.
Dwyer coached the boys hockey team during the event in Switzerland.
Canada defeated Finland 4-2 on Wednesday.
Antonin Verreault and Nate Danielson gave the Canadian squad a 2-0 lead three minutes into the game while Cédrick Guindon scored twice to round out the scoring. Vincent Filion stopped 18 shots, including 12 in the third period, for the victory.
“Our goal was to get better as the tournament went on, and I think we did an exceptional job at that,” Dwyer said. “Our players bought in to how we have to play collectively as a group to be successful, and I thought we continued to grow as a team and individuals. We’re happy we’re finishing it off with a win and winning an Olympic medal.”
Canada went 1-1 in the preliminary round and lost a 2-1 decision to the United States in the semifinal. Canada won bronze at the inaugural Games in 2012 in Austria and a silver at the 2016 event in Norway.
