With six days to go before the NHL trade deadline, Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin went into seller mode Tuesday afternoon when he sent defenceman Marco Scandella to the St. Louis Blues for a second-round pick in June’s NHL Entry Draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2021.

Bergevin had acquired the veteran defenceman from the Buffalo Sabres on Jan. 2 in exchange for a fourth-round pick at this year’s NHL Draft that they had previously acquired from the San Jose Sharks.

Scandella, who is the nephew of former Canadiens forward Sergio Momesso, had one goal, two assists and a plus-one rating and eight penalty minutes in 20 games this season with the Canadiens. The Montreal native had 3-6-9 totals and was plus-9 in 31 games with the Sabres.

The 29-year-old, who is 6-foot-3 and 212 pounds and shoots left, was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the second round (55th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft. Scandella is in the final season of a five-year, US$20-million contract.

There’s a possibility that this is not the end of Scandella’s association with the Canadiens. He’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and could re-sign with the team.
