CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Mile Hill Willie continued his march towards his divisional Atlantic triple crown as he captured the Maritime Breeder’s final on the Saturday afternoon program at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The $7,000 final for two-year-old trotters saw Little Miss Winnie (Kenny Arsenault) set the tempo but get chased down by Mile Hill Willie in the final quarter as he extended his win streak to six straight. Mile Hill Willie shook free for a five-length victory in 2:04.1 for trainer-driver Gilles Barrieau and owner Paul Morrison of Cardigan. Second went to Oceanview Hal (Henry Smallwood) while Little Miss Winnie hung on for third.
Buckaroo captured the three-year-old Maritime Breeder’s trot final for a $7,850 purse for trainer-driver Marc Campbell and owners Larry and Kathy Chappell of Marshfield. The son of Tad The Stud stopped the clock in 2:02.2 over West River Cindy (Ken MacDonald) and Daisy River (Paul Lanigan).
Barrieau had three winners on the afternoon program as he clicked with Woodmere Finesse in the $2,350 fillies and mares open pace in 1:56.4 over a track listed two-seconds off. Jeff Lilley trains Woodmere Finesse for owner Ed Maher of Lower Sackville, N.S. Barrieau’s other win came with Lincoln Seelster in a 2:00.4 victory for trainer Jackie Matheson of Stratford.
Czar Seelster delivered as the post time favourite in the Race 9 preferred pace getting the lion’s share of the $2,500 purse. Mike McGuigan supplied the winning steer in a mile time of 1:57.1 for trainer Todd Weatherbee and owner Tammy Johnston of Stratford. Three Truths (Arsenault) had his win streak cut short as he settled for second and Half Cut (Mark Bradley) was third.
