Luis Severino pitched five dominant innings, and the New York Yankees hit three homers, recording an 8-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday afternoon in their final regular-season home game at Yankee Stadium.
Severino (1-0) allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked none in his second start after being activated from the injured list Tuesday. After throwing 67 pitches in four innings that day against the Los Angeles Angels, Severino was stretched out to 80 on Sunday. He threw 54 of those pitches for strikes, including the first 11 of the game.
Aaron Judge hit a solo homer, Brett Gardner added a three-run homer and DJ LeMahieu hit a two-run homer as the Yankees raised their season total to 298.
Giancarlo Stanton added a sacrifice fly and Luke Voit hit an RBI single as the Yankees won for the 12th time in their past 18 games.
The Yankees (102-55) concluded their 11th regular season at the current Yankee Stadium with a 57-24 record. They matched their highest win total in the current stadium (2009) and finished the season by going 20-0-3 in their last 23 home series, their longest run since going 20-0-5 from Sept. 15, 1997 to Aug. 16, 1998.
New York remained one-half game behind Houston for the best record in the majors. The Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels later Sunday.
Billy McKinney roughed up Yankees relievers for a pair of homers: a two-run shot off Tyler Lyons in the seventh and a solo homer off Nestor Cortes Jr. in the ninth for Toronto (63-93), which dropped its second straight after matching a season high with five straight wins.
The Yankees jumped on Toronto opener Wilmer Font taking a 4-0 lead five batters into the game. Font's record with the Blue Jays fell to 2-3.
Two batters in, Judge hit his 26th homer by hammering a 1-0 slider to a loading dock area in left-center field. Following walks to Stanton and Voit, Gardner hit his 27th by sending a 3-1 fastball into the second deck in right field.
LeMahieu made it 6-0 with one out in the second by hitting a first-pitch fastball from Trent Thornton into the right-center field seats for his 26th.
The Yankees added two in the fifth when LeMahieu walked and Judge reached on an infield single after shortstop Richard Urena's foot came off the second base bag. Following a wild pitch by Thornton, Stanton hit a loud fly ball to left field to score LeMahieu and Voit followed with a single to center field.
Font was used as Toronto's opener for the 14th time and allowed four runs on four hits in one inning. Thornton allowed four runs on five hits in five innings.
