Pitching king as Alpines defeat Islanders 2-0 and 3-1 on NBSBL opening day

SAINT JOHN, N.B. — The host Saint John Alpines swept a doubleheader from the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders Saturday to open the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League season.

The Alpines took Game 1 2-0 and the second contest 3-1 to take a pair of quick, well-pitched contests. The Islanders host the Moncton Fisher Cats Monday at 2 p.m. at Memorial Field in their first home game of the season.

Game 1

The Alpines scored single runs in each of the first two innings of the opener.

Luc Vautour had a triple and Jimmy Jensen a single for the Alpines hits while Ayron Fournier had an RBI and a walk.

Logan Gallant went 1-for-3 with a double to lead the Islanders offence while Josh MacDonald and Grant Grady each added a single. MacDonald and Nick MacPhail, hitting third and fourth, respectively, in the lineup, each drew a walk.

Andrew Case, who pitched in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, struck out six in five innings for the victory while allowing three hits. Jay Johnson, the lefty who pitched previously with the Fredericton Royals, struck out one in two no-hit innings of relief for the save.

Darcy Affleck allowed two earned runs on two hits and five walks while striking out four in six innings.

Game 2

The Islanders opened the scoring in the top of the first of Game 2, but Saint John responded with two in the bottom of the inning and added another run in the fifth.

Ron Barton went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Alpines. Leadoff hitter Adam Clark had a single, a double, a walk and scored twice. Johnson doubled while Jensen and Adam Fournier each singled.

Leadoff hitter Taylor Larkin went 1-for-3 and scored the Islanders run. MacPhail had a single and drove in Larkin while Johnny Arsenault was 1-for-2.

Pete Gehle struck out 11 in five innings for the victory. He allowed a run on three hits in five innings of work. Jensen struck out six in two innings for the save.

Jordan Stevenson allowed two earned runs on six hits in four innings in the loss. He struck out seven in four innings of work. Porter Smith allowed a run on two hits in two innings of relief while striking out two and walking two.
