MONCTON, N.B. – Prince Edward Island is back to .500 at the Canada Cup after a resounding 11-2 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador Saturday morning in Moncton.
The P.E.I. Youth Selects (2-2) scored seven times in the third inning en route to the win. P.E.I. plays the host New Brunswick (3-0) squad at 2 p.m. in its final game of the preliminary round.
Gabriel Penalver was 2-for-4 with a single, a triple, four RBI and scored three times to pace P.E.I.’s 11-hit attack against Newfoundland and Labrador.
Duncan Picketts had a single, a double, scored twice and drove in a run while Nicholas Havenga had two singles, a run scored and an RBI. Dylan Cameron had a double and drove in three runs.
Josh Myers was 1-for-3 and scored twice, Dylan Noonan, Ben MacDougall and Chase Gaudette each singled. Gaudette also had an RBI.
Dylan McCormack threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory. He allowed a hit and a walk.
Starter Jack MacKenzie allowed two runs on five hits while Nolan Ryan finished the game by allowing one hit. Each pitcher threw 2 1/3 innings and struck out three.
Newfoundland and Labrador scored a run in the bottom of the first, but P.E.I. responded with two in the top of the second before exploding for seven in the third. Newfoundland got one back in the bottom of the inning, but that was as close as they would get.
P.E.I. closed out the scoring with two in the fifth.
