SLEMON PARK, P.E.I. — SLEMON PARK – It was a good weekend for P.E.I. girls’ fastpitch teams at the Summerside Showdown tournament.
The P.E.I. Stars defeated P.E.I. East 10-0 to win the combined under-14/under-16 title. In the under-12 final, the West Royalty Rockets held on to edge the Stratford Stealers 17-16.
A total of 11 teams from P.E.I., New Brunswick and Nova Scotia competed in the two divisions during the three-day tournament in Slemon Park.
Under-16
After suffering a tournament-opening 4-1 loss to Nova Scotia’s Sackville Surge, the Stars bounced back to win five games in a row, outscoring the opposition 47-6 in the process.
Andrea Caron, who was named the Stars’ tournament most valuable player (MVP), pitched a perfect game in the championship final.
Ella Condon was named P.E.I. East’s tournament MVP.
Under-12
The final between the Rockets and Stealers featured several lead changes, lots of offence and an exciting finish.
West Royalty opened a 10-2 lead after three innings, but Stratford would not go away and entered the sixth and final inning with a 14-13 lead.
The Rockets answered back, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 17-14 lead into Stratford’s last at-bat. The Stealers rallied for two runs with two outs to narrow the lead to 17-16 and threatened to win the game.
With the tying run on third base and the winning run on second, pitcher Madelyn MacLean recorded a strikeout to end the threat and win the gold medals for West Royalty.
Ailah MacDonald (West Royalty) and Celia Conohan (Stratford) were selected as the tournament MVPs for their respective teams.
