The Morell Chevies swept both ends of a Kings County Baseball League doubleheader from the Peakes Bombers on Sunday, taking the opener 8-3 then being awarded the second game 1-0 after a Peakes ejection left the team without enough players to finish the game.
In the opener in Morell, the Bombers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring twice in the first inning on a Sean Corcoran single and adding a run in the third on a Josh Coffin RBI single.
The Chevies struck back with four runs in its half of the second, with RBI singles off the bats of Taylor Larkin, Scott Harper and Logan Gallant.
But a four-run sixth, capped off by Desi Doyle’s three-run double put the game out of reach.
Troy Coffin picked up the win for Morell, tossing the complete game while picking up five strikeouts. Rob Phelan suffered the loss.
Harper finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Doyle, Larkin, Gallant and Mike Ellsworth each added two hits.
Corcoran and Matt Bradley led the way for Peakes with two hits apiece.
In the second game, an RBI single by Doyle in the bottom of the first gave Morell a 1-0 lead. The after an argued third strike call in the top of the second inning led to a Peakes ejection, the team was left with eight players and the game was awarded to the Chevies.
Extra innings were needed as the Charlottetown Expos defeated the P.E.I. Youth Selects 3-2 in nine innings in Charlottetown.
Tyler Johnston got the complete-game victory for the Expos, allowing two runs on five hits. Johnston walked three and struck out three Selects batters.
Nate Jones left with a no-decision, throwing six innings. He gave up two runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out four. Dylan Cameron took the loss in relief, throwing one- and one-third innings. Cameron surrendered one run on a walk and a base hit. He struck out three.
Top batters for the Expos were Jeremy Koughan (3-for-4, double, game-winning RBI) and Jordan Duffy (1-for-2, three walks).
Chase Gaudette (1-for-4) and Nick Havenga (1-for-4, double) paced the Selects offence.
