The 21-year-old catcher played the past two seasons with the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that the Detroit Tigers organization has given me,” MacLaren said in a release on the team’s website. “Without the support of my family, friends, teammates and coaches this would not have been possible. I'm truly humbled and excited to be a part of the Detroit Tigers organization.”

He hit .247 this season with seven doubles and three home runs in 55 games for the Panthers.

MacLaren played for Team P.E.I. at the 2013 Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Que.
